SeX Positions History

Sexual positions have been written about more, and have generated more interest regarding methods  and guides, than any other topic in the
history of sex writing. Since sexuality is inherent, it’s only reasonable to assume that the practice of performing and exploring different sexual
positions predates any recorded history on sexual positions.

Guides teaching the methods of sexual positions can be traced back to about 1 BC to 1 AD, when the first two books of Ars Amatoria ("The Art of
Love") were written by the Roman poet Ovid. It was written in verse and covers heterosexual love and sex, making it one of the earliest sex and
sexual position manuals.

In the 4th Century, Vatsyayana wrote the Kama Sutra detailing almost 529 sexual positions, and it was considered the standard work on love and
sexual positions. Life-size stone sculptures of heterosexual couples performing practically every sexual position were carved on the temple walls
of Konarak in thirteenth-century India. These sculptures are considered the finest erotic art in the world. In North Africa, Arabs produced the
sexual positions guide, The Perfumed Garden for the Soul’s Recreation in the early sixteenth century, and the thousand-year-old Japanese
medical text, Ishimpo, instructs students on healing sexual positions.

Illustrations of sexual positions present can be found in almost every religion and race as well. The Kama Sutra included sexual position
illustrations while the classic Japanese erotic art style, Shunga, offers a unique rendering of sexual positions.

Early sex and sexual position researchers include Richard Freiherr von Krafft-Ebing, whose 1886 book, Psychopathia Sexualis, recorded a
number of unusual sexual abnormalities. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Sigmund Freud developed a theory of sexuality from his
clients, while Otto Gross and Wilhelm Reich, two Freud scholars, conducted revolutionary studies around human sexuality.

In 1919, Magnus Hirschfeld founded the Institut fur Sexualwissenschaft (Institute for Sexology) in Berlin, but when the Nazis took power they
destroyed it. Alfred Kinsey also studied sex and sexual positions and in 1947 founded the Institute for Sex Research at Indiana University at
Bloomington, now called the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction.

Sexual position experimentation should be one of the most exciting aspects of sex for a couple. Sexual positions are merely different types of
dances that help couples add excitement and variety to their sex lives. Some sexual positions have a specific purpose, (e.g. trying to get
pregnant or achieving orgasm). While other sexual positions, like rear entry or female superior, might be explored simply to add variety to a
bedroom ritual. And some sexual positions found in guides like the kama sutra, tao, tantric sex, the Perfume Garden and Ananga Ranga can
supply a couple with a more spiritual level of sex.

Yet, many are afraid to try new and different sexual positions because they’re either unsure of their own ability or not clear of the techniques
involved. Some may be unsure of how their partner will react to a certain sexual position or become embarrassed if they cannot perfect a
different  sexual position on the first try. So, the first step to enjoying new and exciting sexual positions is communicating. Discuss   what sexual
positions you and your partner like and are willing to try. It’s important to remember that a sexual position should make sex feel good. It should
bring a couple closer in their relationship while helping them enjoy each other. Besides having fun, engaging in new sexual positions should help
develop trust, and through practice, help you and your partner learn something about each other.

Missionary Position Variations:

The missionary position is probably the best-known sexual position in the Western World. The full  body contact of both partners in the
missionary position gives it a unique level of closeness, which  can be heightened by kissing, caressing and holding.

There are several missionary position variations, which can be started from the missionary position.   If these sexual positions become confusing,
remember that the foundation for these sexual positions  is the basic missionary position.

  • Side-Entry  Position– The man kneels and straddles the woman’s lower leg. The woman’s upper leg can move freely, but it might be
bent. Either partner can hold the woman’s leg to her chest. The advantages of this variation on the missionary position ranges from ease
of penis insertion and ease of body caressing to easy clitoris stimulation and the ability of the man to control his thrusting. Disadvantages
of this sexual position includes the distance of the couple, making it difficult to kiss, and the inability to thrust hard and press body to body
    simultaneously.

  • Squashing of the Deckchair –. The woman lies on her back while the man aligns himself with her vagina. The man then holds, or
presses with his shoulder, the woman’s legs upward. This sexual position is easy and promotes good clitoral stimulation.

  • Butterfly  Position – The man stands up while the woman lies on her back on a surface below the man’s waist height. The woman lifts her
pelvis as the man supports her weight with his hands so her vagina is aligned with the penis, and the man penetrates her. This missionary
position variation is good for stimulating a woman’s g-spot..

  • Coital Alignment Technique - The man lies above the woman as in the missionary position, but instead of penetrating her moves upward
along her body so the base of his penis provides stimulation to her clitoris as they both thrust. This missionary position variation has been
known to stimulate the woman well enough to increase her likelihood of her having an orgasm.

Sexual Positions for Rear Entry Sex

Rear entry sex, also known as doggy style, provides certain stimulation that other sexual positions don’t. Rear entry sex lets a couple experience
new sensations because the angle of entry is different from other sexual positions. From behind, a man has can alter his movements and can
thrust deeper with rear entry sex, while the woman can work with her partner by guiding the speed and depth of penetration. Rear entry sex is a
vaginal sexual position and should not be confused with anal sex position.

Some couples think a lack of intimacy exists during rear entry sex because they can’t see each other during passionate moments. Adding mirrors
and setting them in different angles can offer a more intimate and unique experience.

Basic Rear Entry Sex - The woman gets on her hands and knees or lies on her stomach. The man positions behind her, gets on his knees or feet
and grasps the woman’s hips for leverage. The man's legs can be inside or outside of the women's legs, but the closer together the women’s
legs, the more friction occurs between the penis and vagina.

Women may find rear entry sex somewhat restrictive, but a low bed or furniture piece will let them rest their upper torso, giving them more
freedom to move their hips and pelvis. Men may find it difficult to prolong their orgasm while having rear entry sex because of its intense
stimulation. Consequently, the couple may wish to use rear entry sex as an end to their lovemaking session.

Variations on rear entry sex:

  • Upright Doggy – The woman kneels upright as the man penetrates her from behind.

  • Forward for Pleasure – For this sexual position, the man lies on his back and the female straddles his hips with her back to him. She can
rock back and forth using his legs for support or he can support her hips with his arms to assist her movement. While this rear entry sex
position does not involve direct clitoral stimulation, women may find that by leaning forward as far as possible will help them feel an
    extremely pleasurable sensation.

  • The Chair - The man sits upright in a chair, for this type of rear entry sex, while the woman sits down on his lap. Her back is pressed to his
chest as she begins to move up and down. The woman uses her arms and legs to adjust the speed of the movement. If a chair is
uncomfortable, the man can kneel with his buttocks on his ankles, while the female positions herself onto his penis. There is not a great
deal of movement involved, but this sexual position can be used for after sex play or for men with limited mobility.

  • Leapfrog – For this rear entry sex position, the woman is on her hands and knees, but lowers her torso and raises her buttocks to the man.

  • Face Down – This is similar to Leapfrog rear entry sex, except the woman lies face down with her legs spread apart. The male then
straddles her thighs from behind. Placing a pillow underneath her abdomen will shift the angle of her hips and make entry easier.
Establishing a rhythm with this sexual position can be difficult, and the penis has a tendency to slip out of the vagina forcing the couple to
restart lovemaking. Starting with slow shallow thrusts will help.

  • Face Up - The man lies on his back while the woman lies with her back pressed against his chest. This allows easy access to the clitoris,
which can be massaged during this type of rear entry sex. Also, this kind of rear entry sex is excellent for pregnant women because there is
no stress on the woman’s front.

  • Spoon – This rear entry sex position is relaxing and simple. Both partners face the same direction and lie on their sides with the man
behind the woman. The woman slightly parts her legs, bends her knees and tilts her hips to one side as the man guides his penis into her
vagina. Thrusting and movement is limited in this type of rear entry sex but it is very close and intimate.

Sexual Positions for Sitting

  • Sitting or kneeling sexual positions are for those who enjoy slow motion sex because the angles for intercourse for many of these sexual
positions are not conducive for vigorous thrusting.

  • Sit-Down - The man lies on his back and gets into the old “bicycle” exercise position (resting on is shoulders, hips and but in the air,
weight resting on his elbows and holding hips high).  The woman, facing away from him, lowers herself onto his penis by sitting down on his
butt.  His feet rest against her back and she rests her fingers on the back of his thigh.  His hands are placed on her thigh.

  • The Slide - The man kneels down on a hard surface, keeping his back straight, in praying position.  The woman lies down in front of him,
genitals facing him. He lifts her legs up to his shoulders, so that her weight is supported on her shoulders.  Holding his erection downward,
he penetrates the her.  He hold her in position by wrapping his arms around her upper thighs.

  • The Interlock - Start by getting into missionary position.  The man sits up and brings both legs forward, one at a time, so the soles of his
feet are flat on the bed. His knees are bent, he is leaning back, supporting himself on his hands. The woman sits up and supports herself
on her hands. She puts her ankles on his shoulders and lifts her hips as high as possible.

  • Sitting Pretty - The man sits in a sturdy chair while the woman straddles him, her knees up, either side of his chest.  Holding on to the
back of the chair, she pushes away with her feet and moves up and down.
