Beautifully Me Butterfly Effect is a culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, eccentric and critical
approach to addressing the unique needs of adolescents ages 11 to 25, by increasing the knowledge
and skills needed to enhance self-esteem, self-efficacy while reducing their risk for HIV/AIDS and other
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI). Additionally, the project also focus on breaking intergeneration
cycles that contribute to negative beliefs, thoughts and behavior.
Because the adolescence can be a time of self-discovery and eXploration, we believe that it is important
to facilitate this journey by empowering young women with the necessary tools in a safe, healthy and
non-judgemental environment.
Beautifully Me is the cocoon which serve as the safe space for growth. The metamorphosis-taking
place inside the cocoon represents the acquisition and exploration of knowledge and skills needed, in
order to begin owning and embracing their newfound selves. And so shall they emerge from the cocoon
as a beautiful butterfly empowered to unleash their feminine powers on the world. As they spread their
wings and fly they will serve as a model to the world; demonstrating that young women can change
social norms. It's the Butterfly EffectTM.......referring to the ideal that the flapping wing represents a
small change in the initial condition of the system, thus causing a chain of events leading to a large-
scale alterations of events*
Grounded in the Dimension of Learning framework and the Behavior Change Theories, The Butterfly
Effect project aims to:
• Reduce negative patterns and behaviors by addressing intergenerational patterns.
• Reduce behaviors that put adolescents at risk for acquiring HIV/AIDS, other sexually transmitted
infections by reducing risk factors and strengthening and protective factors.
• Increase self-esteem and self-efficacy by enhancing life skills.
• Empower young women to be agents of change by redefining and reclaiming positive images of
young women in society.
